Elisabeth Rhyne
Former Managing Director, Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion, Academic Advisor, CAFI

Dr. Rhyne is an independent consultant working primarily on financial health. Her clients include the UN Secretary General’s Special Advocate for Financial Inclusion, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, as well as banking authorities in several counties.


She founded the Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion (CFI), an action-oriented think tank that engages and challenges the industry to better serve, protect, and empower clients.


Dr. Rhyne also co-founded the Smart Campaign, which embedded client protection principles throughout the microfinance industry and broader financial inclusion sector. As Senior VP of Accion from 2000-2008, she led Accion’s entry into Africa and India. During the 1990s she led the Microenterprise Initiative at the U.S. Agency for International Development. 


She has written books and articles on financial inclusion, including The New World of Microenterprise Finance, Mainstreaming Microfinance, and Microfinance for Bankers and Investors. She holds a master's and Ph.D. in public policy from Harvard University and a bachelor's in history and humanities from Stanford University.
